You Got Inked — Now What?
Another flash day is in the books, and we're still buzzing from how much fun Saturday was. To everyone who walked through the door, waited patiently, and left the studio with a fresh piece of art on their skin — thank you. The energy in the studio all day was incredible, and we loved seeing every single design walk out the door.
Now the important part starts: healing. A tattoo is only as good as the aftercare it receives, and even the cleanest, sharpest work can heal poorly if you don't look after it properly. Darwin's tropical climate adds its own challenges — heat, sweat, and humidity can all affect the healing process. Here's how to keep your new piece in perfect shape.
The First 48 Hours
These are the most critical hours. Your tattoo is an open wound, and it needs to be protected and kept clean.
- Leave the bandage on for at least 3 hours after leaving the studio. If you received a Saniderm or second-skin wrap from your artist, follow their specific instructions — these wraps can stay on for up to 24 hours.
- When you remove the wrap, wash your hands first with antibacterial soap. This is non-negotiable.
- Gently wash the tattoo with lukewarm water and a mild, fragrance-free liquid soap. Use the palm of your hand — never a cloth or sponge. Pat dry with a clean paper towel.
- Apply a thin layer of the aftercare balm we gave you. The layer should be thin enough that you can still see the tattoo through it — glopping it on suffocates the skin and slows healing.
- Repeat the wash and moisturise cycle twice a day for the first week.

Dealing with Darwin's Weather
September in Darwin is hot and humid, and sweat is your tattoo's worst enemy during the first week. Here's how to handle it:
- Avoid midday sun entirely between 10am and 3pm. If you have to go outside, cover the tattoo with loose, clean clothing — not sunscreen (not yet anyway).
- Air conditioning is your friend. Try to stay in a cool environment as much as possible for the first 48 hours.
- If you're sweating through your shirt, rinse and re-moisturise the tattoo — but don't overdo it. Sweat sitting on the fresh skin can clog pores and cause breakouts.
- Skip the beach and the pool. No swimming, no spa, no beach walks where sand might get on the tattoo. Not even a quick dip. Wait at least 4 weeks.
Days 3–10: The Itchy Stage
Around day 3, your tattoo will start to peel and itch. This is completely normal — it means your skin is doing what it's supposed to do.
- Do not scratch, pick, or peel. Even if it's unbearably itchy. Picking at the flakes will pull ink out and leave you with patchy spots that need a touch-up.
- If the itching is really bad, you can slap the area gently with a clean hand or apply a cool (not ice-cold) clean compress for 30 seconds.
- The peeling usually lasts 5–7 days. You'll see thin flakes of coloured skin coming off — this is normal and doesn't mean you're losing ink.
- Keep applying the aftercare balm twice a day. Once peeling finishes, you can switch to regular unscented moisturiser.

Weeks 2–4: Settling In
The outer layer of your skin will look healed by now, but the deeper layers are still repairing. Don't be alarmed if your tattoo looks a bit cloudy, dull, or hazy — this is the "milky" healing stage and it passes.
- You can shower normally but still avoid baths, spas, and swimming.
- You can go back to the gym after about 10 days, but be careful — sweat and friction from gym clothes can still irritate the area. Shower immediately after your workout.
- Sun protection becomes essential. Once the peeling is done and there are no open areas, start applying SPF 50+ sunscreen over your tattoo whenever it's exposed. UV rays fade tattoos faster than anything else.
- Keep moisturising daily — hydrated skin keeps ink looking vibrant for longer.
When to Get in Touch
Most tattoos heal without any issues, but it's important to know what to watch for. Contact us if you experience any of the following:
- Excessive redness or swelling that gets worse after 3 days instead of better
- Pus or green/yellow discharge coming from the tattoo
- A fever at any point in the first week
- Large, raised, itchy bumps that don't go away after a few days
- If you suspect you might be having a reaction to the aftercare product or the ink
Our artists are always available to answer questions — just send us a WhatsApp message with a photo and we'll take a look. Don't be embarrassed to reach out. We'd rather you checked in about something minor than let a small issue become a big problem.
Planning Your Touch-Up (If You Need One)
About 90% of flash pieces heal perfectly on the first go, but everyone's skin is different. If after 4 weeks you notice any spots that didn't take ink well — usually small gaps or slightly faded areas — we offer complimentary touch-ups within 3 months of your flash day.
To book your touch-up:
- Wait until the tattoo is fully healed (at least 4 weeks)
- Take a well-lit photo in natural daylight
- Send it to us via WhatsApp and we'll book you in
Remember: the touch-up is there to catch those small imperfections, not to fix issues caused by poor aftercare. Following the steps above will give you the best possible chance of a perfect first heal.
Show Us Your Healed Work
Once your piece is fully healed, we'd love to see it. Tag us in your photos on Instagram — we love reposting healed shots of our work, and it helps other people see what a well-cared-for tattoo looks like when it's finished settling in.
Thanks again for making Flash Day 3 such a memorable day. We can't wait to see you all again for the next one.
