Why Artist Selection Matters More Than You Think
A tattoo lives on your skin for the rest of your life. The quality of the work — the precision of the lines, the longevity of the shading, the accuracy of the composition — is entirely determined by the skill and experience of the artist who creates it.
Choosing based on proximity or price alone is one of the most common mistakes first-time clients make. Here's how to approach the decision properly.
Step One: Identify Your Style
Before you start browsing artists, know what style of tattoo you want. Tattooing is not one discipline — it's many. A realism specialist is not interchangeable with a fine line artist. A Japanese traditionalist works very differently from a blackwork illustrator.
Major tattoo styles include:
- Black and grey realism — photographic portraiture and natural subjects
- Colour realism — hyper-detailed, painted-quality work
- Fine line — delicate, minimalist compositions with thin linework
- Japanese / Irezumi — structured compositions using traditional motifs
- Polynesian / tribal — geometric, pattern-based work with strong cultural roots
- Blackwork — bold, graphic, often geometric or illustrative
- Neo-traditional — exaggerated, illustrative work with rich saturation
- Watercolour — painterly, fluid colour work without defined outlines
Once you know your style, you can narrow your search to artists who specialise in it.
Step Two: Review Their Portfolio Critically
A portfolio tells you everything. When reviewing an artist's work, ask yourself:
- Are the lines clean and consistent? Lines should be smooth, not wobbly or uneven.
- Does the shading heal well? Look for healed photos, not just fresh work. Realism and fine line pieces especially look very different healed.
- Is the style consistent? A strong specialist will have a cohesive portfolio. An inconsistent one is a warning sign.
- Do they have work in your style? Don't assume an artist can do any style — look for evidence.

Pay particular attention to healed work. Fresh tattoos always look their best — it's the healed result that matters.
Step Three: Read Reviews and Ask Around
Online reviews on Google and Instagram are useful, but personal recommendations carry more weight. Ask friends whose tattoos you admire where they got them done. The tattoo community in any city is tight-knit, and a consistently excellent studio develops a reputation quickly.
Look for reviews that mention:
- The consultation experience
- How the artist communicated during the session
- How the tattoo healed
- Whether the result matched expectations
Step Four: Book a Consultation
A good artist will offer a consultation before committing to any work. Use this time to:
- Assess the communication. Do they listen carefully? Do they ask questions about what you want? Do they offer creative input while respecting your vision?
- Review their custom design process. Ask how they approach designing a custom piece.
- Discuss pricing. Understand how they charge — by the hour, by the piece, or with a deposit — and get a realistic estimate.
An artist who rushes the consultation or seems uninterested in your ideas is a red flag regardless of their technical skill.
What to Watch Out For
- Unusually low prices — quality tattooing is skilled labour and costs accordingly. Suspiciously cheap work almost always reflects shortcuts.
- No portfolio of healed work — every experienced artist has healed photos. If they can't show you any, be cautious.
- Pressure to commit immediately — a good artist will give you time to decide.
- Unwillingness to customise — if an artist only tattoos off flash sheets and shows no interest in creating something original, they may not be the right fit for custom work.
